Meet the giants of the ocean and the forest in the Great Southern wine region. From majestic whales at play in the coastal waters of Albany, to the treetops of Western Australia’s 400-year-old tree tingle forests, there are plenty more great southern treats in between on this four-day scenic drive. The best time of year to experience this itinerary is from May to October to coincide with the whale watching season, however can still be enjoyed all year round.

Suggested Itinerary

DAY 1: PERTH

Upon arrival at Perth International Airport, pick up your car from Hertz counter at the airport and drive to the hotel for check-in. Free at leisure for the rest of the day.

Overnight at All Suites Perth

DAY 2: PERTH - BUNBURY - BUSSELTON - MARGARET RIVER
Estimated distance: 260km / 3 hours 5 minutes

An early morning start will give you the best chance of meeting the friendly wild dolphins of Bunbury for a memorable close encounter. Head south from Perth on the Kwinana Freeway and Forrest Highway and you’ll reach the Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre within just two hours. You are booked to join the 12PM sightseeing cruise within the protected waters of Koombana Bay and the Leschenault Inlet. Departing from the beach in front of the DDC, the knowledgeable Skipper / tour guide will introduce you to the local Bottlenose dolphins as they interact with each other in their natural environment. After the cruise, make the 50-minute journey to Busselton for lunch overlooking Geographe Bay and the longest timber jetty in the southern hemisphere – Busselton Jetty. Take the 1.8-kilometre jetty walk, or ride the train and take a tour of the Underwater Observatory (own expense) your window to Australia’s greatest artificial reef. From here, it’s another 30-minute drive to reach Margaret River for your overnight stay.

DAY 3: MARGARET RIVER

A day at leisure to experience the region’s many fine wineries and breweries for lunch. You can easily spend the whole afternoon indulging in premium wines and fine artisan foods, hopping between the cellar doors and gourmet produce stores of Margaret River. Hand pick your ingredients for a cook-your-own dinner, or dine on the fine creations of the region’s many award-winning chefs. See the Australian Good Food Guide for inspiration. OR proceed to Mammoth Cave for a guided tour of the wild depths of Mammoth Cave, Lake Cave, or Jewel Cave – home to the longest straw stalactite on show in the world (own expense)

DAY 4: MARGARET RIVER - CAPE LEEUWIN - PEMBERTON
Estimated distance: 237km / 3 hours

Check out early and proceed to Hamelin Bay. Hamelin Bay on the southwest coast is a serene open sandy bay, famous for the abundance of stingrays which frequent the bay. Do try to arrive before 10:30am when more stringrays will be around at the Jetty area. Next, another 30mins drive south for Cape Leeuwin, the most south westerly tip of Australia and one of the best places to whale watch (seasonal). Here the Indian and Southern Oceans meet, in summer the cape sparkles in the sunshine while in winter fierce ocean swells crash against land. The Leeuwin-Naturalist National Park's home to historic Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse which acts as a maritime landscape and important meteorological site - guided tours are available. You can take a quick lunck at the cafe before making your way to the Diamond Forest Farm stay. Do try to arrive the arrive at Diamond Forest Farm stay about 3PM. Settle into one of the western red cedar cottages overlooking the picturesque 50 acre farm surrounded by Karri forest!

DAY 5: PEMBERTON - ALBANY
Estimated distance: 238km / 3 hours

This morning, join the farm host on their daily animal feed and get up close and personal with the farm animals; cuddle a bunny, collet chicken eggs, hand feed friendly cows or pat a horse! Check out at 10am and head for Walpole! Don't miss the "Wild Over Walpole" cruise through Walpole's breathtakingly beautiful Wilderness Zone, or, between Walpole and Denmark, the Valley of the Giants' new Tree Top walk through the canopy of the tingle trees (own expense). Back on the ground, the Ancient Empire boardwalk meanders around the sometimes through these immense trees. This is nature at its most inspiring - guaranteed to make your toes tingle! William Bay National Park, near Denmark, is home to beautiful Green's Pool, and other places worth visiting in Denmark include Jassi Skincraft and Pentland Alpalca and Tourism Farm.

DAY 6: ALBANY -HYDEN
Estimated distance: 407km / 4 hours 22 minutes

Albany has some of the best preserved 19th century streets capes in Australia, and sits astride the beautiful Princess Royal Harbour. Don't leave town without acquainting yourself with the big "Qmity" replica, which houses an incredible array of collectibles, and the commanding views from the top of Mt. Clarence. Across the harbour, see Whaleworld the only whaling museum created from an operational whaling station, now paying tribute to these magnificent creatures. On the coast, see the spectacular rock formation of The Gap and the Natural Bridge.

By late morning, depart Albany and drive north on the Albany Highway through the wine growing region of Mt Barker. Then head through the Wheatbelt towns of Cranbrook and Katanning to Wagin, centre of the famous Australian Merino sheep stud industry. Visit Wagin’s Historical Pioneer Village, a replica of how the town would have appeared 100 years ago and don’t forget to take your photo alongside the Giant Ram.

From Wagin, it is worth taking the drive 80 kilometres to Kukerin and Cambinata Yabbies farm to sample some of the local cooked Yabbies. Moreover, another interesting site is along the ‘Tin Horse Highway’ just east of Kulin. Here you can pose with over 30 caricatures of horses, placed by wheat farmers alongside the road.

Depending on how you are doing for time, make you way to Hyden and explore the stunning ‘Wave Rock’ geological formation. An important site for the local aboriginal communities, it is well worth climbing to the top of Wave Rock to watch the sun spectacularly descend over the Western Australian Wheatbelt region.

DAY 7: HYDEN TO PERTH
Estimated distance: 336km / 4 hours

Before embarking on the final leg of your journey, check out ‘Hippos Yawn’, just outside of Hyden. It is a cave that looks as the name implies; then head east, past Kondinin, until you arrive at the dog-loving town of Corrigin. Here you will come across Corrigin’s famous dog cemetery as well as the Corrigin Dog statue that commemorates the world record Ute convoy that passed through the town in 2003.

From Corrigin, the countryside changes from the golden Wheatbelt to green undulating hills. Visit the historic of York make sure you stop for a drink and visit some of its attractions, such as its motor museum or, for the adrenalin junkies, a skydive over the wheat fields. This is the final stop before driving the last 90 kilometres to Perth.

DAY 8: PERTH

Scramble for some last minute shopping and sit back and enjoy a cuppa while you recollect memories of your trip at Jean Pierre Sancho, an award-winning bakery in town. Then drive to Perth International Airport for your departure flight back home!
